President Obama this afternoon heralded the "overwhelming" UN Security Council vote on new Iran sanctions, saying the outcome shows that "actions have consequences."

"We know that the Iranian government will not change its behavior overnight," he said in a statement to the press this afternoon. "But today's vote demonstrates the growing costs that will come with Iranian intransigence."

Obama emphasized that they day "was not inevitable," coming after his administration pledged a willingness to "pursue diplomatic solutions to address the concerns over Iranian nuclear programs." He added as well that the vote does not rule out a new effort along those lines. The intransigence of the Iranian government left the global community with no choice, however.

"Actions do have consequences, and today the Iranian government will face some of those consequences," he said. "Whether it is threatening the nuclear non-proliferation regime or the human rights of its own citizens, or the stability of its own neighbors by supporting terrorism, the Iranian government continues to demonstrate that its own unjust actions are a threat to justice everywhere."

The Security Council resolution passed 12-2, with Turkey and Brazil dissenting. Obama said the outcome showed "strong international support," noting affirmative votes from Russia and China. He also noted that it comes just short of the one-year anniversary of Iranian elections that resulted in a disputed win by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, sparking deadly protests.
